Dear Dale is a compilation of letters and photographs that were submitted around the world to the author's son as he lay in a Grand Rapids, Michigan hospital room, fighting for his life. He was admitted with severe pneumonia which turned septic. Two days later, he underwent emergency surgery to amputate his right lung. A week later, he recovered and the doctors told us he would be moved to Mary Free Bed, and physical rehabilitation hospital. Later, he contracted two more strains of sepsis and the staff informed us that he would not survive. He then had both his legs amputated at the knees. We were unable to communicate with him the entire six week stay in the hospital as he was heavily sedated and paralyzed. He died six weeks into his illness. These letters and photographs depict a small part of who this young man, Dale, was to so many people. They tell his story of love and compassion he had for his fellow man, and how he shared God with anyone who would listen in coffee shops around Grand Rapids by buying coffee for strangers. This is a young man you will come to love and never forget.
